The icy plunge is the new infinity pool. As wellness travel trends towards more adventurous experiences, cold-water swimming and wild bathing are having a moment. From Slovenia's Lake Bled to Canada's Moraine Lake, a new study ranks the world's best cold-water escapes by analyzing over 54,000 Google reviews. Icewear, an Icelandic apparel brand, crafted the Hot and Cold Therapy Index, tracking positive keywords and manually removing false positives. The results reveal a world where icy dips can be as restorative as thermal soaks.
Lake Bled in Slovenia takes the top spot with a 76.8% positive review rating. Surrounded by the Julian Alps, this glacial lake offers crisp, crystal-clear water and idyllic scenery, making it one of Europe's most atmospheric spots for cold-water swimming and lakeside wellness escapes. Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, Canada, follows with 72% positive views, famous for its vivid blue water and dramatic mountain views, though it barely gets warmer than 5C even in high summer.
Cairngorms National Park in Scotland shares second place with 72% positive reviews, offering some of Scotland's best wild swimming in clean, scenic lochs and rivers. Popular spots like Loch Morlich and Loch Insh, flanked by sandy beaches and imposing hills and mountains, remain cold all year round. Canada's Banff National Park, with 71.2% positive reviews, boasts two spots in the top five, including Johnson Lake, a warmer non-glacier-fed lake suitable for families, and Cascade Ponds, a popular destination with a sandy bottom and an easily accessible beach area.
Lake Tahoe in the US rounds out the top five with 67.7% positive reviews, attracting wild swimmers with its clear alpine water and mountain scenery. Brave swimmers brave near-freezing temperatures, while those less accustomed to the cold can opt to visit from June to September when lifeguards are on duty and temperatures can reach up to 21C. This ranking showcases the growing appeal of cold-water escapes, offering both invigorating swims and restorative experiences in spectacular natural settings.
