GalaxEye's Drishti satellite is a groundbreaking innovation in Earth observation technology, marking a significant leap forward for India's space sector. This satellite is the first of its kind to integrate Electro-Optical (EO) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors, enabling all-weather, day-and-night imaging capabilities. This unique feature sets it apart from conventional optical satellites, which are limited by cloud cover and darkness, and radar satellites, which struggle with image interpretation. By synchronizing and combining both data streams, GalaxEye's satellite delivers more consistent and usable imagery for ground users.
The 190kg spacecraft is designed to support a wide range of applications, from border surveillance and defense monitoring to disaster response, agriculture, infrastructure planning, and insurance assessment. Its ability to function during floods, cyclones, or landslides is particularly noteworthy, as radar imaging can continue even when cloud cover hinders optical satellite imagery. Additionally, the satellite's onboard artificial intelligence processing, powered by Nvidia's Jetson Orin computing platform, reduces the time required to convert satellite imagery into actionable information.
With a resolution of 1.5 meters and a revisit time of seven to ten days, Drishti can deliver high-quality imagery globally. The spacecraft's size, comparable to a compact refrigerator, houses a deployable antenna spanning about three-and-a-half meters. GalaxEye's previous testing and the successful flight of an earlier payload aboard an Isro PSLV mission under the POEM platform have paved the way for this launch.
The startup's interest has already attracted attention from both defense and civilian agencies, with discussions ongoing with multiple Indian government departments. GalaxEye has also established distribution partnerships across more than 20 countries. Following the launch of Drishti, the company plans to expand its constellation with 8 to 12 satellites over the next four years, aiming for even sharper imagery in future versions.
